The superstar actor Aamir Khan with the Midas touch, celebrates his birthday on March 14. We wish he continues delivering the biggest blockbusters and content-driven films in years to come. He is super lucky for directors. However, he is also unlucky for the makers.
As they say, Aamir Khan directs Aamir Khan – a famous notion! His films give its directors the biggest blockbusters of their career. And Aamir rarely works with the same director again, and the makers pay the price with a failure in their next venture. Don’t believe us? Check out the tales of these directors.
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
Rang De Basanti – a revolution that hit the nation. And Aamir Khan as DJ was the scene-stealer throughout. Though chances of attributing the success of this film to Aamir were less, as there were many other significant characters. Mehra returned with Delhi 6, and its fate was always in doldrums with mixed reactions for everywhere. The verdict was out – it was a flop. We wish Aamir had agreed to do at least a cameo, as that was enough to encourage some beneficial changes in the script. After all, there’s none right now.
He was riding high on the success of Hum Tum, and managed to accomplish the tough task of getting Aamir and Kajol together in a film. We all know about the ego hassles that followed. Nevertheless, Fanaa was a blockbuster. And Kunal Kohli followed it up with a disastrous Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, and some more films – all failed. There was a slight problem here – the magical Aamir was missing.
His Dil Chahta Hai remains a cult film and represents the modern India. Aamir was awesome and the film a smash hit. But Farhan’s next Lakshya, with Hrithik bombed at the box office. Despite being a good film, there was something missing. Some people said – it was Aamir.
Aamir and Ashutosh came together for Lagaan – the masterpiece, which even made it to the Oscars. Wow! And Aamir was all out to promote his production at the Oscars. Even Ashutosh wouldn’t have expected a ‘No’, when he approached him for his next venture – Swades. It was Shahrukh’s gain again. He was good and Swades was termed as his transition from a star to an actor. But commercial success eluded Ashutosh, leaving many wondering if Aamir would have been a better bet. But he moved on to work with bigger stars in his next, and still going strong.
John Mathew Mathan
Who can forget Sarfarosh – probably one of the first films and a pioneer in films hitting back at Pakistan and border terrorism. John waited for two long years to start the film with Aamir. And Aamir went to the extent of getting the script rewritten and even checking John’s monetary status before saying yes. And it paid off. It was a huge success and the critics loved it. What more can you ask for? John came back with his second film Shikhar starring Shahid Kapoor and Ajay Devgn. You don’t remember – we don’t blame you. It came and went without a trace. If only Aamir would have agreed to do it, John would have got second time lucky.
What can we say! He’s the man who made Aamir a star, and brought him to limelight. And he’s also the only one luck guy who got to work with Aamir on three films – Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar and Akele Hum Akele Tum. The last one was not a blockbuster, fine, but gathered enough critical acclaim and recognition. The came Josh, remake of West Side Story, which met with an average box office success and no acclaim. When Aamir refused to do it, Shahrukh filled the slot. His stardom helped the film, but not to a large extent. The product was not scripted or packaged well enough to succeed. The debacle of Josh was all it took for Mansoor Khan to big goodbye to film-making. We all know he has not made a film after that.
Aamir gave Vikram his first blockbuster with Ghulam. What followed Ghulam is not even worth mentioning – until Vikram found his mojo back with horror flicks.
Ok so we are adding this name here as his next is not with Aamir. Aamir gave him his biggest blockbuster in 3 Idiots, and he chose to cast Aamir again for PK. Smart chap we must say. But his next one doesn’t feature Aamir. You got the message.
How Yash Chopra got almost saved…
Maybe the only lucky director immune to the jinx was Yash Chopra. He worked with Aamir in Parampara and cast him in his next Darr too. Aamir agreed and started working on the film, only to fall out over creative differences later. Darr was not a failure. Maybe, among other factors, because Aamir had initially given his nod for the project. And that’s where Chopra got immunity to the jinx.
So what does Aamir bring to the table that other actors don’t? The answer lies in Taare Zameen Par, which showed the director in him. Probably, his alleged ‘interference’ is just another word for his creative inputs!
