The Panama Papers shook the world, and they are set to rock the silver screen now thanks to ace filmmaker Steven Soderbergh.
The Steven Soderbergh film on Panama Papers leak will be based on the upcoming book The Secrecy World by Jake Bernstein. Jake is an investigative reporter who played a key role in unveiling of close to 11 million records that featured some of the world’s wealthiest and biggest names.
Soderbergh teams up with screenwriter Scott Z. Burns, leveraging their past associations in Contagion, The Informant! and Side Effects. Lawrence Grey, Grey Matter Productions is producing the feature film on Panama Papers with Michael Sugar, Anonymous Content. Soderbergh also joins the list of producers.
For the unintiated, the Panama Papers refer to documents leaked by International Consortium of Investigative Journalists – that conatined details on how the world’s powerful used a Panamanian law firm of Mossack Fonseca to escape financial scrutiny. That surely makes for an interesting theme to make a film out of.
We’ve seen the Oscar winner Spotlight that delved into the world of investigative journalism. This looks like the next milestone film in investigative journalism going by the impressive credentials of Soderbergh.
Jake’s book is expected to contain a lot of new details and some more revelations about the financial machinations of rulers, illegal activities of banks, how U.S. companies and citizens played a big role, and the indepth story of how a global team of investigative journalists unveiled the truth.
Soderbergh is busy with a NASCAR-set heist movie called Logan Lucky right now, starring Daniel Craig, Channing Tatum, Hilary Swank and Katherine Heigl.
